Overcoming challenges through community support
Florence’s story is one of resilience, hope, and the struggle for survival in the face of overwhelming odds. Born at home to a teenage mother, tragedy marked Florence’s entry into the world. Her mother experienced a prolonged labor, and without access to immediate medical care in the rural area where they lived, Florence was severely asphyxiated at birth. No resuscitation was available, and incredibly, it took four days before she could cry—an event that could have meant the difference between life and death.
Florence’s young mother, overwhelmed by her circumstances, left her baby under the care of her great-grandmother. The mother remarried, unable to continue a relationship while raising a child from a previous one. Florence’s great-grandmother, though loving, was elderly and struggled to provide the medical care Florence desperately needed.
It wasn’t until Florence turned four that she could finally start receiving occupational therapy, thanks to a generous well-wisher who helped cover the cost of therapy sessions and transport to the clinic. Sadly, as Florence’s great-grandmother aged and eventually passed away, so did the financial support for her treatments.
Florence’s grandmother stepped in, working tirelessly to continue her granddaughter’s care. She took Florence to different hospitals, seeking any interventions that could improve her condition. Eventually, Florence was referred to a specialized center, the Holistic Nurturing Health Hub, where she could receive more tailored therapy and treatment.
But despite her grandmother’s unrelenting determination, the family’s biggest challenge remains transportation. Without reliable means to consistently bring Florence to her therapy appointments, the progress she has made is at risk of being lost.
Florence’s journey is far from over. She has shown incredible strength, overcoming so many barriers, and with continued therapy, she can keep moving forward. Now, she needs your help.
